What Is HPV?

HPV is short for human papillomavirus. How common is HPV? It is the MOST common sexually transmitted infection. There are 2 types that are considered "high risk" as well as "low risk" HPV. In some cases there will be genital warts and other "high risk" cases involving cancer of the vulva, vagina, anus, and penis. What is the good news if any? Well, 90% of cases clear up in 2 years of the initial infection. Your immune system should wipe out the infection and especially of the "low risk" type. Many times there are no symptoms that ever show up.

How Do People Get HPV?

It is passed on to another sex partner through genital contact. This includes both vaginal and anal sex. The real issue... what tends to happen is that an infected person does not know he or she has HPV, thus passing it on to the next person unknowingly. So, be careful and talk to your doctor before having sex and passing on HPV to the next person. A partner has the right to know the risks involved as well as being informed about HPV.

Who Gets HPV?

It occurs not only in women, but in men as well. However, women have been reported to show a higher incidence of the various forms of cancers as a result of being infected by HPV.

What Treatments Are There For HPV?
